The Teenage Engineering Desk: 5 Objects That Make a Room Look Like a Studio

July 22, 2026 · 6 min read

There's a category of object that exists slightly outside the reason you'd buy it. A field recorder for someone who doesn't record. A handheld that plays cartridges you already own. The function is real, but the reason people buy them is that somebody made a decision most companies would have argued out of the room.

Teenage Engineering built a whole company on that idea, and a few others are working the same seam. These five sit on a desk and change what the desk means.

The edit

Teenage Engineering OP–XY Portable Synthesizer

OP–XY Portable Synthesizer · Teenage Engineering

The OP–XY is a 64-step sequencer, synth and sampler milled from a slab of aluminium. It's comfortably the most expensive thing we stock and the one I'd defend hardest: nothing else looks or feels remotely like it.

Teenage Engineering TP–7 Field Recorder

TP–7 Field Recorder · Teenage Engineering

A motorised reel-to-reel field recorder that fits in a jacket pocket. The reel spins under glass while it records, which is completely unnecessary and the entire point.

Nothing Ear Wireless Earbuds

Ear Wireless Earbuds · Nothing

Transparent earbuds that show their own components. Every other manufacturer hides the inside; Nothing made it the product.

Analogue Pocket Handheld Console

Pocket Handheld Console · Analogue

The Analogue Pocket plays original Game Boy cartridges at the hardware level rather than emulating them. A genuine cult object with a real waiting list.

Marshall Emberton III Speaker

Emberton III Speaker · Marshall

A guitar-amp grille shrunk to paperback size. The least surprising object here and the one you'll use most.

The cheapest way in is the earbuds; the one you'll still own in ten years is the OP–XY.
